Was du monatlich verfolgen solltest

Cena SMS-a se premika z dolžino sporočila, kodiranjem znakov in ciljno državo — trije gumbi, o katerih večini lastnikov trgovin ni bilo treba nikoli razmišljati.

Omejitev 160 znakov predpostavlja osnovni nabor znakov GSM.

Nato dodajte tri posredne postavke:

  2. Strošek osipa. Vsak odgovor STOP trajno odstrani naročnika, ki ste ga plačali za pridobitev — pogosto prek spodbude ob prijavi, vredne nekaj evrov. Pri 0,5 % stopnji odjav na pošiljanje kampanje tedenska kampanja skozi leto porabi približno petino vašega seznama (ponazoritveno — obrestno, pred novimi prijavami). To postavko poganja pogostost bolj kot karkoli drugega, zato sta strošek in kadenca isti pogovor: kako pogosto naj spletna trgovina pošilja marketinška sporočila.

  • Skupni dejanski strošek, tesna različica: grobo 1.228 €/mesec — proti miselnemu modelu s cenovne strani »4.000 SMS-ov ≈ nekaj sto evrov«.

Calculating the Real Cost of SMS Marketing

The real cost of SMS marketing is the per-segment price multiplied by the number of segments each message actually uses, times list size, times frequency — plus three costs no pricing page shows: the margin you give away in text-only discount codes, the compliance text that eats your character budget, and the lifetime value of every subscriber who replies STOP. The advertised “price per SMS” is the price of one 160-character, plain-text segment to one country. Most stores send messages that cost two or three times that without realizing it, usually because of one emoji or a curly apostrophe. Before you can judge whether the channel pays, you need the honest denominator; the revenue side of that equation lives in how to measure revenue from ecommerce SMS marketing.

The invoice that doesn’t match the pricing page

You signed up expecting texts to cost roughly a cent or two each. Three months in, the SMS line on your statement is double what the mental math predicted, and nothing in the dashboard obviously explains it. This is one of the most common surprises for stores adding SMS, and it almost never comes from the platform overcharging. It comes from four mechanics that sit between “price per SMS” and what you actually pay.

Email trained us badly here. An email costs the same whether it’s three words or three thousand, one recipient in Ljubljana or one in Los Angeles. SMS pricing moves with message length, character encoding, and destination country — three dials most store owners have never had to think about.

Why “the platform is cheap per message” tells you almost nothing

Comparing platforms on headline per-SMS price is like comparing printers on the sticker price and ignoring the ink. The variables below move the real number far more than a fraction of a cent between vendors:

Segments, not messages. Carriers bill in segments. A single plain-text SMS holds 160 characters; go over, and the message is split into segments of 153 characters each, and you pay per segment. A 320-character text is billed as three sends. Write a generous message with a link, a code, and opt-out text, and “one SMS” quietly becomes two or three.

Encoding — the expensive apostrophe. The 160-character limit assumes the basic GSM character set. Include any character outside it — an emoji, and in many cases the curly apostrophe (’) that word processors insert automatically when you type “you’re” — and the whole message switches to Unicode encoding, where a segment holds only 70 characters (67 when concatenated). One pasted apostrophe can turn a one-segment message into a three-segment one and triple its cost. This is the single most common silent budget leak I’ve seen, and it’s why SMS copy should be typed into the platform editor, not pasted from a document.

Destination country. Per-segment prices differ several-fold between countries. If you sell across borders, your blended rate depends on where your list lives, and one market can quietly dominate the bill. Check your platform’s per-country rate card — the spread is bigger than most people expect.

Compliance overhead. Marketing texts need identification and an opt-out path, and “Reply STOP to unsubscribe” plus your store name consumes 30–40 characters of every message. Your effective creative space in a one-segment send is closer to 120 characters than 160.

The full cost formula

Write this out for your own store once; it takes ten minutes.

Direct send cost = subscribers reached × sends per month × average segments per message × per-segment rate for the destination.

Then add the three indirect lines:

  1. Discount margin. SMS leans on codes more than email does — short message, so the offer does the talking. If your texts carry 10% codes and SMS-attributed orders average €60, every redeemed order carries a €6 cost that appears in no SMS report. On many stores this line exceeds the entire send bill.
  2. Churn cost. Every STOP reply permanently removes a subscriber you paid to acquire — often via a signup incentive worth several euros. At a 0.5% opt-out rate per campaign send, a weekly campaign burns through roughly a fifth of your list a year (illustrative — compounding, before new signups). Frequency drives this line more than anything else, which is why cost and cadence are the same conversation: how often should an ecommerce store send marketing texts.
  3. Your time. Small line, worth naming: SMS copy needs its own writing pass, its own quiet-hours rules, its own compliance check. It is not “email but shorter” from a workload perspective.

A worked example (illustrative numbers throughout)

A store with 4,000 SMS subscribers, selling in one country at an assumed €0.04 per segment:

  • One weekly campaign, written carelessly at two segments: 4,000 × 4.3 sends/month × 2 × €0.04 = €1,376/month.
  • Same campaign disciplined to one segment: €688/month. Half the bill, one editing habit.
  • Each campaign carries a 10% code; say 90 orders a month redeem it at €60 average order value: €540/month in margin.
  • Total real cost, tight version: roughly €1,228/month — against a pricing-page mental model of “4,000 texts ≈ a few hundred euros.”

Every figure above is invented to show the mechanics. Rebuild it with your own rate card, list size, and redemption data.

Cutting the cost without cutting the channel

The lever order matters — start where the money is:

  1. Audit segment counts first. Your platform’s message editor shows a character/segment counter as you type. Pull your last five campaigns and check what they actually cost per recipient. Hunt for stray Unicode characters.
  2. Shrink the audience before the message. The cheapest text is the one you don’t send to someone who was never going to buy. Sending campaigns to your full list is the SMS equivalent of printing flyers for every address in the country — how to decide which customers should receive SMS covers the selection logic.
  3. Shift weight from campaigns to flows. Triggered messages (cart, back-in-stock) go to few people with high intent, so their cost per order is a fraction of a broadcast’s. A store spending 80% of its SMS budget on broadcasts usually has the ratio backwards.
  4. Question the code. Test campaigns without a discount before assuming SMS needs one. If revenue holds, line 1 of your indirect costs disappears.
  5. Protect the list you have. Retention is a cost lever here, since every lost subscriber was paid for — the tactics are in how to reduce SMS unsubscribes in ecommerce.

What to track monthly

Four numbers on one line in a spreadsheet:

  • Average segments per message (target: 1.0 for most sends)
  • Blended cost per delivered message, straight off the invoice
  • Cost per SMS-attributed order, including discount margin
  • Opt-out cost: subscribers lost × your cost to acquire one

The third number is the one that decides the channel’s future. SMS earns its keep on stores where order values absorb the cost; a €25-AOV store discounts and texts its way underwater on math that a €120-AOV store barely notices.

Where Omnisend fits

Cost mechanics — segments, encoding, country rates — work the same on every platform, because carriers set the rules. Where platforms differ is visibility and billing model. Omnisend, which I use in my own stores, sells SMS as credits priced per country and shows the segment count in the editor while you type, which is where the curly-apostrophe problem gets caught before it ships. Rates and credit terms change, so pull the current per-country pricing from their site rather than trusting any number in a blog post, mine included.

The fair caveat: no platform will stop you from sending a three-segment discount blast to your whole list. The cost discipline in this article lives in your process, and the tool just executes it faster.

Your next step

Open your last SMS campaign and count its segments — editor counter, or characters ÷ 153 if any symbol pushed it to Unicode. If it’s above one, rewrite it to a single segment as an exercise; that habit alone is worth hundreds of euros a year at moderate volume. Then put your real cost next to your real revenue with how to measure revenue from ecommerce SMS marketing and let the pair of numbers set your SMS budget for next quarter.
