Sieh dir an, wer deine E-Mails tatsächlich erhält.

Ekskluzivnost in zadržanost gresta z roko v roki.

E-pošta 1 — obvestilo (2–3 dni pred odprtjem dostopa). Preprosto in osebno: »Nova kolekcija gre v živo v četrtek.

Specifikacija avtomatizacije

Pred predstavitvijo novega seruma teh 900 v nedeljo dobi obvestilo, v torek ob 9.00 pa e-pošto o dostopu, z javno predstavitvijo v četrtek.

Kako to izmeriti

  • Prihodek na prejemnika e-pošte o dostopu, glede na vaše običajno merilo kampanje — glavna številka, in običajno najbolj laskava, kar jo boste videli.
  • Delež VIP-okna v skupnem prihodku dogodka — koliko predstavitve nosi vaša najvišja stopnja.
  • Stopnja ponovnih nakupov VIP-segmenta čez 6–12 mesecev, v primerjavi s primerljivimi strankami zunaj programa.

Creating an Early-Access Campaign for VIP Customers

An early-access campaign gives your best customers a genuine head start — usually 24 to 48 hours — on a launch, a sale, or a restock, before the rest of the list hears about it. Build it in three parts: a VIP segment defined by real behavior (repeat purchases, spend, recent engagement), a short two-email arc (a heads-up, then the door opening), and a hard rule that the public never quietly gets the same or a better deal afterwards. The reason to do it is margin: access is a reward that costs you nothing per use, unlike the VIP discounts most stores default to, and it strengthens exactly the customers who already drive an outsized share of your revenue. Done honestly, it’s the cheapest loyalty mechanism in ecommerce.

The problem: your best customers get treated like everyone else

Look at who actually receives your emails. In most stores, the customer who has ordered nine times gets the identical campaigns, at the identical time, with the identical offers as someone who signed up for a popup discount last Tuesday and never bought. From the inside this feels fair. From the repeat customer’s side it reads as indifference — their loyalty changes nothing about how you treat them.

The costs show up in two places. First, during high-demand moments, your best customers compete with everyone else for stock; when the popular size sells out in six hours, some of the people who missed it were your most valuable buyers. Second, when stores do reward VIPs, the reward is almost always a deeper discount — which spends real margin on the exact customers who were already willing to pay full price. That’s the most expensive possible way to say thank you.

Why a bigger discount is the wrong VIP reward

A VIP coupon has three problems a head start doesn’t.

It trains your most profitable customers to wait for coupons, converting full-price buyers into discount buyers — a self-inflicted margin leak that compounds with every send. It’s also indistinguishable from ordinary promotion; a “VIP 20% off” email lands in the same mental bucket as every other discount they get, from you and from everyone else. And it leaks: codes get shared, and a “VIP-only” code circulating in a coupon aggregator makes the label meaningless.

Early access flips all three. It costs nothing per redemption. It can’t be shared usefully — the link opens for everyone in 48 hours anyway. And it communicates status in a way a percentage never does: you’re seeing this first because of who you are to us, not because we want to move inventory.

Deciding who counts as a VIP

Resist the urge to make this complicated. Pick behavior-based criteria your platform can evaluate automatically, so the segment maintains itself. A workable starting definition:

  • 3 or more orders, or lifetime spend above a threshold that fits your store (for a shop with a €60 average order, something like €250+), and
  • an order or meaningful engagement in the last 6–12 months — a five-time buyer from 2023 who ignores every email isn’t a VIP today, and
  • keep the result at roughly the top 5–15% of customers. Too wide and access stops feeling early; a “VIP” list containing half your buyers is just a list.

If you haven’t built tiered segments before, do that groundwork first — the customer segments every online store should create walks through the standard set, and the VIP tier drops straight out of it.

The campaign structure: two emails, one rule

The sequence is deliberately small. Exclusivity and restraint go together.

Email 1 — the heads-up (2–3 days before access opens). Plain and personal: “The new collection goes live Thursday. You’re getting in Tuesday, before we announce it anywhere.” No button to click yet, which is precisely what makes it feel like information rather than promotion. This email tends to be the best-received message stores send all year — you’re giving something and asking nothing.

Email 2 — the door opens. Sent the moment access starts, with the link. Copy stays in the register of recognition, not hype: “Early access is open — you have until Thursday morning before this goes public.” If stock is limited, say what’s limited; first claim on scarce inventory is the concrete value of the whole arrangement. Add one SMS at this moment for opted-in VIPs if you use SMS at all — this is one of the few sends that genuinely justifies the interruption.

The rule that keeps it alive: whatever VIPs got, the public offer must never beat it. If early access was to a sale, the public sale is the same discount or shallower, never deeper. One “everyone gets an extra 10%” extension after your VIPs already bought and the program is dead — the people who trusted the early window paid more for trusting you, they will notice, and no email fixes that. This also means real scarcity claims only: if “limited first batch” turns out to be unlimited, you’ve spent trust to manufacture urgency.

One honest trade-off to expect: early access moves revenue earlier rather than only adding it, so your public launch day will look softer than it would have. That’s fine — plan reporting around the whole window, not day one. And decide the boundary with your promotional calendar deliberately: the noisy version of a sale, with reminders and last-call pressure, is a different machine for a different audience, covered in how to build a flash sale automation without over-messaging.

The automation spec

  • Trigger: scheduled against the launch or sale date; the segment itself updates continuously from order history, with no manual list-pulling.
  • Segment: the VIP definition above, evaluated at send time. Exclude anyone who already bought the featured product at full price recently if the event is a sale.
  • Timing: heads-up at T-minus 2–3 days, access email at opening, and a 24–48 hour exclusive window — long enough to shop, short enough to stay early.
  • Channel: email for both; optional single SMS at the door-open moment, opted-in contacts only.
  • Content: recognition language, the concrete head start, and what’s genuinely scarce. No countdown-timer theatrics — the audience you’re writing to has bought from you repeatedly and can smell manufactured urgency.
  • Goal: purchase during the VIP window, and over time, repeat-purchase rate of the VIP segment itself.

An illustrative example

A skincare store with 12,000 customers defines VIPs as 3+ orders with activity in the past year — about 900 people. Ahead of a new serum launch, those 900 get the heads-up on Sunday and the access email Tuesday at 9:00, with the public launch Thursday. During the 48-hour window, the segment converts at several times the store’s normal campaign rate — unsurprising, since these are proven buyers with first claim — and clears a third of the first production run before the public sees the page. Just as usefully, the public launch now truthfully says “a third of the first batch is already gone.” Numbers illustrative; the mechanism — best customers first, honest scarcity second — is the transferable part.

This structure slots directly into a launch sequence as the early-access step; the full arc around it is in how to build a product launch email sequence. It’s also the calmest way to open Black Friday, a few days before the noise starts — see how to build a Black Friday email automation strategy.

How to measure it

  • Revenue per recipient of the access email, against your normal campaign benchmark — the headline number, and usually the most flattering one you’ll see.
  • VIP window’s share of total event revenue — how much of the launch your top tier carries.
  • Repeat-purchase rate of the VIP segment over 6–12 months, versus comparable customers outside the program. This is the slow, real payoff: whether being treated differently keeps them buying. It’s the same lever described in how to use email automation to increase customer lifetime value.
  • Unsubscribes from VIP sends — should be close to zero. If your best customers are opting out of your recognition emails, the tone or frequency is wrong in a way worth taking seriously.

Where Omnisend fits

The working part of this campaign is a segment that maintains itself. In Omnisend, which I use in my own stores, the VIP tier is a saved segment built on order count, spend, and recency — customers flow in when they qualify and out when they lapse, and the early-access emails just target the segment on a schedule. The SMS step lives in the same flow, so the door-open ping only goes to opted-in VIPs without a second tool or an exported list. Setup is an hour; the hard part is keeping the never-undercut-your-VIPs rule when a slow public launch tempts you to sweeten the deal. No platform enforces that discipline for you. Omnisend is an affiliate partner of Shopimation — the recommendation comes from running these exact campaigns on it.

Your next step

Query your store for customers with three or more orders in the past twelve months and look at the number. That’s your VIP segment, sitting there unrecognized. Pick the next thing on your calendar — launch, sale, or restock — and give them 48 hours of it first.
