Was automatisieren

Začnite tukaj in uglasite:

Nočna pošiljanja zadržite do smiselnega jutranjega okna.

Kaj avtomatizirati

How Soon Should You Send a Browse Abandonment Email

Send the first browse abandonment email 2 to 4 hours after the visitor leaves the product page. That window is long enough that you don’t email someone who’s still shopping — or who was about to add to cart on their own — and short enough that the product is still on their mind the same day. Under 1 hour feels like surveillance and cuts off people who would have converted unaided. Next-day sends waste the moment; by then the tram-ride browser has moved on. For high-ticket products with long research cycles, stretch toward the later end or beyond. The reasoning, the exceptions, and the exact flow settings follow.

Why timing feels riskier here than with cart emails

You’ve probably already got a cart recovery email running an hour after abandonment, and nobody complains — someone who built a cart expects the store to remember it. Browse abandonment is more delicate. The visitor didn’t hand you a cart; they looked at a page. Email them 15 minutes later and the reaction is “how do they know?” That’s a real cost for a store your size: you’ve spent years and serious ad money building a brand people trust, and one creepy-fast email chips at it.

At the same time, wait too long and you’re leaving money on the table with every day of traffic. The tension is real, but it resolves into a fairly narrow answer.

Why the reflexes — instant or “safe” next-day — both lose

The two default choices merchants make are both wrong for opposite reasons.

Instant (15–30 minutes) intercepts your own organic conversions. A meaningful share of product viewers come back and buy the same day with no help. Email them half an hour after the visit and your flow claims credit for orders that were coming anyway — the flow’s stats look great while adding little. It also fires while multi-tab comparison shoppers are still comparing, which is the moment they’re most annoyed by interruption.

Next morning feels polite but misreads how browsing works. Most product-page sessions are impulse-adjacent: a scroll on the couch, a lunch-break search. The emotional pull of the product decays within hours. An email at 9 a.m. the next day about last night’s couch scroll competes with a full inbox and a cooled-off buyer.

The 2–4 hour window threads it: same-day relevance, without stepping on people still mid-decision.

What the delay actually costs or saves: a rough model

Illustrative numbers to make the trade-off concrete. Say 100 identified visitors view a product and leave each day, and 10 of them would return and buy on their own within a few hours. A 30-minute delay emails all 100, including those 10 — the flow reports their orders as wins, but only the incremental buyers matter. A 3-hour delay lets most of the self-returners buy first (they exit the flow when they order), so the emails go to the genuinely stalled 90. Same send cost, cleaner data, and no risk of nudging a sure buyer toward “I’ll decide later.”

Meanwhile a 24-hour delay might reach the same 90 — but with a colder audience. If interest fades by half over a day (again, illustrative), the late email needs double the persuasive power to do the same job. Timing is the cheapest lever in the whole flow; the copy has to work much harder to compensate for bad timing than good timing has to compensate for average copy. That said, once the flow runs, A/B testing browse abandonment timing is how you find your store’s exact number rather than trusting anyone’s default.

Setting the timing, step by step

  1. Start at 3 hours. Middle of the window, safe for nearly every catalog. Don’t overthink the starting value — you’ll test it later.
  2. Add the intent checks after the delay, not before: did they add to cart? Did they order? Either one exits the flow. The delay only works as a filter if the checks run at send time.
  3. Set quiet hours. A 3-hour delay after a 11 p.m. browse means a 2 a.m. email. Configure the flow to hold sends until morning — 9 or 10 a.m. local time.
  4. Adjust for your catalog, later. Impulse-priced products (under ~€50) can tolerate 1–2 hours. Considered purchases — furniture, €300+ electronics — often do better at 4–6 hours or with a research-oriented message; browse abandonment for high-ticket products covers that variant.
  5. Don’t build multiple timing branches yet. One delay for the whole catalog first. Segment by price band only after the simple version has a month of data.

The full flow with timing in place

  • Trigger: product page viewed by an identified contact.
  • Segment: subscribed contacts; exclude purchasers from the last 14 days and anyone in an active cart abandonment flow.
  • Delay: 3 hours, with sends held until 9 a.m. if the delay lands overnight.
  • Conditions at send time: no add-to-cart since trigger, no order since trigger — either exits.
  • Channel: email. Push can go earlier because it’s lighter-touch, but that’s a later addition.
  • Message: reference the product naturally — “Still looking at the
?” — with image, price, link, and 2–3 alternatives. What goes in the body is its own craft; see what a browse abandonment email should say.
  • Goal: return visit converting to an order within your attribution window.

One more guardrail: a visitor who browses daily shouldn’t get this email daily. Cap it at one browse abandonment email per contact per 3–7 days — avoiding sending browse abandonment too often explains where to set that line.

An example with real-shaped numbers

A store selling ergonomic office chairs (illustrative store, illustrative figures): average item €280, buyers typically research for days. The owner starts with the default 1-hour delay. Emails go out while shoppers are still reading reviews elsewhere; unsubscribes tick up. She moves the delay to 4 hours and holds overnight sends until 9:30 a.m. Now the email arrives after the research session has ended but the same day the itch started — a reminder, not an interruption. Nothing else changed: same subject, same template. Timing was the fix.

Metrics that tell you your timing is right

  • Revenue per recipient — the headline number for any delay you test.
  • Flow conversion rate vs your organic return-and-buy rate — if they’re nearly identical, your email fires too early and claims organic orders.
  • Unsubscribe and spam-complaint rate on the flow — the earliest warning that sends feel intrusive.
  • Time-to-purchase after send — if most conversions happen many hours after the email, you can likely afford a longer delay.

Where Omnisend fits

I run browse abandonment on my own stores alongside welcome, cart, cross-sell and win-back flows, and timing is the setting I’ve revisited most. I manage it all in Omnisend — after trying Klaviyo too, it’s the one I found easier to self-manage, which matters when you’re the whole marketing department.

Practically: Omnisend’s Browse Abandonment workflow template ships with the delay step built in — you click it and change the value, and the exit conditions (added to cart, placed order) are already attached. Sending-time controls handle the overnight problem. The honest limits: the delay can’t fix weak email capture (the flow only reaches identified contacts), and no timing setting rescues a product page that hides shipping costs. It needs an afternoon of setup and a few weeks of data before you tune anything.

Your next step

If your browse abandonment flow is live, open it and check the delay. If it’s under an hour or over a day, set it to 3 hours with quiet-hours enabled and let it run for two weeks. If you don’t have the flow yet, start with what browse abandonment is and how it works and build the one-email version first.
