Najprej pravilno preberite signal

To niso hladni stiki – so eni najtoplejših namenov v vaši celotni bazi.

Odziv uskladite s tem, s katero vrsto ponavljajočega brskalca imate opravka.

Kategorijo pozna.

  • Vsebina, zvest kupec: novi izdelki v kategoriji, vrhunska ali spremljevalna možnost in mehak most do sosednje kategorije.

Isti sprožilec, dve osebi, dva prava odgovora.

Kako to izmeriti

What to Do When Customers Keep Returning to the Same Category

When a customer keeps coming back to the same category without buying, treat it as a strong signal and respond to it directly: help them decide within that category rather than pushing them somewhere new. Repeat visits to one section — running shoes, desk lamps, red wine — mean genuine interest and, usually, a specific thing standing between them and a purchase. It might be price, uncertainty about which option is right, a missing size, or simple hesitation. Your job is to read which one it is and remove it, not to bury them in unrelated suggestions. This article is about what a repeated category visit actually tells you and how to turn it into an order, whether the customer has bought from you before or not.

First, read the signal correctly

A customer circling one category is telling you something a single visit never could. This is interest with staying power. They keep thinking about it.

But repetition can mean two very different things, and the right move depends on which. Either they’re stuck in a decision — comparing options, unsure which to pick, waiting for a reason to commit — or they’re a fan of that category who buys from it regularly and is browsing for the next one. A first-time visitor who’s viewed hiking backpacks four times this week is stuck. A customer who’s bought three backpacks from you over two years and is browsing again is loyal. Same behaviour on the surface, opposite responses underneath. Before you send anything, work out which person you’re looking at, because the wrong read wastes the signal.

The real problem: a loud signal, ignored

Most stores see this behaviour in their data and do nothing specific with it. That’s the miss.

A repeated category visit is one of the clearest buying signals you get — clearer than a single product view, more focused than general browsing. And yet the typical response is a generic newsletter, or a best-seller email that ignores the category entirely, or nothing at all. The customer has practically raised their hand and said “I’m interested in this,” and the store answers with something off-topic. Meanwhile browse abandonment logic that could catch this exact moment goes unused, because nobody set it up to watch for category patterns, only single-product views.

Here’s the diagnostic. Look at anyone who’s viewed the same category three or more times in a week without buying. Did they get a single message tailored to that interest? For most stores the answer is no — and every one of those people is a warm lead cooling off.

Where the revenue leaks

The loss is the gap between how strong the signal is and how weakly you respond to it.

Picture 300 customers a month who repeatedly browse one category and don’t buy. These aren’t cold contacts — they’re some of the warmest intent in your whole database. Suppose a well-aimed nudge that addresses the actual sticking point converts 12% of them at a €70 order. That’s roughly €2,500 a month you leave on the table by treating them like everyone else. (Illustrative — your conversion depends on category, price, and how sharp your message is. Test it.)

That number understates the damage, because a repeat browser who drifts away rarely comes back on their own. The window when interest is hot is short. Miss it and you’re not deferring the sale — you’re usually losing it to whoever answered the customer’s question first, often a competitor’s better-timed email.

The practical playbook

Match your response to which type of repeat browser you’re dealing with.

For the stuck decider — help them choose, don’t add options. They don’t need more products; they need a way through the ones they’ve seen. Send a short comparison, a “which one is right for you” guide, a bestseller-within-the-category with the reason it’s the popular pick, or social proof on the specific items they viewed. If the sticking point is likely price, a targeted nudge is where an incentive can make sense — but try clarity before you try a discount.

For the loyal repeat buyer — deepen and extend. They know the category. Show them what’s new in it, a premium option they haven’t tried, or the natural companion to what they own. And because they clearly trust you here, this is the right moment to gently widen their world — introducing them to a related category they don’t yet know they’d like, built on the credibility this category gave you.

For either — address the obvious blockers. If the item they keep viewing is out of stock in their size, a back-in-stock alert is the entire answer. If they always view but never add to cart, the friction might be shipping cost, sizing doubt, or a missing review. Fix the blocker you can actually identify.

Then think one category ahead. A customer settled in one category is a clue about the next. Their purchase and browsing history often points at a logical follow-on — the discipline behind using purchase history to find the next category a customer may need.

What to automate

Watching for repeat category visits by hand is impossible past a handful of customers. This has to run on its own.

  • Trigger: a customer views products in the same category N times (start with three) within a set window (say seven days) without purchasing.
  • Segment: split by history — new/low-history visitors (likely stuck) versus established buyers of that category (likely loyal). Route each to a different message.
  • Channel: email as the workhorse; SMS reserved for genuinely time-bound cases like a back-in-stock alert on a watched item.
  • Content, stuck decider: a category-specific comparison or guide, proof on the viewed items, and one clear path to choose.
  • Content, loyal buyer: new arrivals in the category, a premium or companion option, and a soft bridge to an adjacent category.
  • Timing: fire within a day of the visit that crosses the threshold, while interest is warm.
  • Goal: conversion within the category — or a considered step into the next one — measured against a control that got your generic email.

A store example

A home-office store notices a customer viewing the standing-desk category five times over ten days. No purchase. The generic response would be the monthly newsletter. The category-aware response reads the signal: this person is deciding.

Because he’s a first-time visitor with no order history, the store treats him as stuck. He gets one email — not a product dump, but a short “how to choose a standing desk” piece comparing the three models he actually looked at, with the load ratings, warranty, and a line on which suits a small room. One button per desk. The email removes the exact fog that kept him circling. Contrast that with a returning customer who’s bought a desk and a chair before and is now browsing desks again: she’d get new arrivals and a premium electric model, plus a nudge toward the cable-management and lighting category. Same trigger, two people, two right answers.

How to measure it

Judge the response against doing nothing special.

  • Category conversion rate for triggered customers versus a holdout that got your standard email. This is the headline.
  • Time from trigger to purchase — a good nudge should shorten it.
  • Click-through on the tailored content — tells you the message matched the interest.
  • Progression to the next category — for loyal buyers, did the bridge land?
  • Unsubscribe rate on the flow — should stay near zero; if it climbs, your trigger is firing too aggressively or too soon.

Where this stops and a neighbour begins

This article is about the browsing signal — repeat visits to a category, purchase or no purchase. If your customer has actually bought from a new category and you’re deciding what to recommend next, that’s a different moment with its own logic in what to recommend after a shopper buys from a new category. And if the deeper goal is helping people find things they’d never have searched for on their own, start with how to help shoppers discover products they didn’t know to search for. Here we’re strictly on the repeated-category visit and how to convert it.

How Omnisend fits

The mechanics — tracking category-level browsing, counting repeat views, splitting new visitors from established buyers, and firing a tailored email within hours — are what a behaviour-based automation tool is for. I run this in my own stores through Omnisend, which I picked over Klaviyo for how directly it ties browsing behaviour to automated flows and segments. You can build a browse-abandonment-style automation keyed to category activity and route people down different branches based on their history.

The honest part: the tool can detect the pattern, but it can’t tell you why a customer is stuck. That read — price, doubt, stock, or plain hesitation — comes from you knowing your category and your customers. The automation delivers the right message fast; deciding what that message should say is still your work. Omnisend is an affiliate partner of Shopimation, recommended from daily use, and the free tier is enough to build one category-triggered flow and measure it against your current approach.

Your next step

Open your analytics and find the customers who’ve viewed one category three or more times this week without buying. That list is your warmest untapped intent. Build a single flow that catches them and sends one genuinely relevant message — a comparison for the deciders, new arrivals for the loyalists. When you’re ready to make this kind of intent-reading the foundation of all your recommendations, read building product recommendations around customer intent.
