Was automatisieren, ausbuchstabiert

Was messen

Ta vodnik pokriva tokove, ki to počnejo, zakaj generični nasveti o dopolnjevanju tu odpovejo in kje trgovina z darili tiho izgublja ponovni prihodek.

Zakaj trgovine z darili razbijejo običajno avtomatizacijo

To mejo potegnite pošteno, ker gradnja napačnega sistema požre mesece.

Kje prihodek odteka

Odtekanja v trgovini z darili so specifična.

Imeli ste popoln vzvod in ga pustili zdrsniti.

Sezonski vrh brez nadaljevanja. Trgovine z darili živijo in umrejo z božičem, valentinovim, materinskim dnem.

1. Zajem priložnosti in opomnik

Značilni tok trgovine z darili in prvi za graditi. Zajemite datum in prejemnika (čeprav le “bratov rojstni dan”). Nato, nekaj tednov preden ta datum spet nastopi, pošljite opomnik s svežimi idejami za darila. Enkratni nakup ste spremenili v letni sestanek.

2. Pretvorba prejemnika v stranko

3. Sezonski in predpraznični tokovi

To eno vprašanje hrani vsak drug tok.

Primer trgovine

Kupec v začetku maja kupi personaliziran spominek za obletnico poroke prijatelja in na blagajni obkljuka “opomni me pred tem datumom naslednje leto”.

Email Automation for Gift Stores

Gift stores have a structural problem most shops don’t: the person buying isn’t the person using, and they usually buy for a specific date, then disappear. So the automation that works for a gift store looks different from a standard retail setup. Instead of “buy again soon” reorder logic, you build around occasions — capturing the dates people buy for, reminding them before the next one comes round, and turning gift recipients into customers of their own. Get the occasion data and you convert one-time gift buyers into a predictable annual habit. This guide covers the flows that do that, why generic replenishment advice fails here, and where a gift store quietly loses repeat revenue.

Why gift stores break normal automation

Most ecommerce automation assumes the buyer will want more of what they bought. A skincare customer reorders serum; a coffee buyer reorders beans. That logic falls apart in a gift store, because the buyer often has zero personal interest in the product. Someone buys a novelty mug for their brother-in-law. Recommending more mugs to them is pointless — they don’t want mugs, they wanted a gift for one person on one date.

This is the boundary that separates a gift store from a consumable or replenishment store. If your catalog is genuinely re-bought by the same person (candles they burn, stationery they use up), you’re closer to email automation for consumable product stores, and that logic applies. A true gift store — where purchases are made for other people, on occasions — needs occasion-based automation instead. Draw that line honestly, because building the wrong system wastes months.

Where the revenue leaks

The leaks in a gift store are specific.

The occasion you never captured. A customer buys a birthday gift in March. You have no idea whose birthday it was or that it recurs every March — so next year, when they’re gift-hunting again, you’re not the shop that reminds them. You had the perfect hook and let it slide.

The recipient who stayed a stranger. You shipped a lovely gift to someone who’s never heard of your store. They open it, love it, and have no reason to ever visit you — because nothing invited them.

The seasonal spike with no follow-through. Gift stores live and die by Christmas, Valentine’s, Mother’s Day. A store can triple its list every December and then let all those buyers go cold by February, treating a once-a-year rush as if it were a one-off.

Put an illustrative number on the first leak. If 1,000 customers a year buy for a recurring occasion and you could bring even 15% back next year with a well-timed reminder — 150 orders at, say, €35 — that’s around €5,250 in repeat revenue you’re currently leaving to memory and luck.

The flows to build, in order

1. Occasion capture and reminder

The signature flow of a gift store, and the one to build first. When someone buys, invite them to save the occasion: “Want us to remind you before this date next year?” Capture the date and the recipient (even just “brother’s birthday”). Then, a few weeks before that date rolls round again, send a reminder with fresh gift ideas. You’ve turned a one-time purchase into an annual appointment.

2. Recipient-to-customer conversion

Every gift you ship is a warm introduction to a new person. If you can include a card, an insert, or a digital touchpoint that invites the recipient to discover the store on their own terms, you convert a stranger into a customer. This is a slower flow, and it depends on getting a channel to the recipient — but it’s found revenue from a person you already reached physically.

3. Seasonal and pre-holiday flows

Because gift demand clusters around dates, your calendar flows matter more than in most niches. The mechanics of running spiky, date-driven demand — building the list before the peak, warming it during, and keeping it after — are a discipline of their own, covered in email automation for seasonal ecommerce stores. Read it alongside this; the overlap for gift stores is heavy.

4. Welcome flow that asks the right question

A gift store’s welcome shouldn’t assume the reader wants things for themselves. Ask early: are you shopping for yourself or for others, and are there occasions you’d like reminders for? That one question feeds every other flow.

What to automate, spelled out

For the occasion reminder flow:

  • Trigger: a purchase tagged as a gift, plus an occasion date the customer saved.
  • Segment: buyers with a stored occasion date, grouped by the occasion month.
  • Timing: fire 3–4 weeks before the date — enough lead time to browse, decide, and ship.
  • Channel: email primarily; SMS for opted-in buyers close to a high-value date.
  • Content: a reminder of the occasion, fresh gift ideas in the right range, and an easy path to reorder or rebuy for the same person.
  • Goal: an annual repeat purchase driven by the calendar, not by discounting.

The hard part isn’t the send — it’s the capture. Your forms, checkout, and post-purchase emails all need to invite people to save occasions. No captured dates, no flow.

A store example

A customer buys a personalized keepsake in early May for a friend’s wedding anniversary and, at checkout, ticks “remind me before this date next year.” The following April, a reminder lands: “The anniversary you shopped for last year is coming up — here are a few new ideas, including matching pieces to what you gave last time.” Meanwhile, the gift itself shipped with a small card inviting the recipient to browse the store. One purchase has become a recurring annual sale plus a shot at a brand-new customer. No discount required — just memory and timing the customer would rather outsource to you anyway. (Illustrative example — adapt the products, dates, and lead times to your own store.)

What to measure

  • Occasion capture rate: what share of buyers save at least one date. This is the leading indicator for the whole strategy — everything downstream depends on it.
  • Reminder conversion: of occasion reminders sent, how many produce an order a year later.
  • Repeat purchase rate, measured over a 12-month window rather than the 30–90 days most stores use — gift buying is annual, so short windows will lie to you.
  • New customers from recipients: if you run recipient-conversion touchpoints, track how many recipients become buyers.

Sorting these buyers correctly — gift-only, self-plus-gift, seasonal-only — is its own task, and the customer segments every online store should create covers how to structure that.

How Omnisend fits

The occasion model needs a tool that can store custom date fields per contact, trigger automations off those dates, and segment by them. I use Omnisend in my own stores, chosen after testing it against Klaviyo, and for a gift store the relevant pieces are custom properties (to hold occasion dates and recipient labels), date-based automation triggers, and clean segmentation by occasion or buyer type. Email, SMS, and push in one place helps when a high-value date is close and email alone won’t cut through.

The honest limit: none of this works without capture. The tool can fire a perfect reminder, but only if your forms and post-purchase flow actually collected the date — and that’s a design and copy problem on your side, not something automation solves for you. A gift buyer also won’t save a date for a shop whose products they didn’t love, so the fundamentals still have to be right. Omnisend is an affiliate partner of Shopimation; I recommend it from real use, and the free tier is enough to build the capture-and-reminder loop and test it before a peak season.

Your next step

Before you build a single email, fix capture. Add one clear “save this occasion for a reminder next year” prompt at checkout and in your post-purchase email this week — that field is the foundation everything else stands on. Once dates are coming in, build the reminder flow to fire 3–4 weeks ahead, and measure it over a full year. To place this inside a broader plan for keeping customers rather than renting them each holiday, read how to build a customer retention system for ecommerce.
