Odstranite oznake in gledate dve različni miselni stanji.

Njegovo vedenje se razpršuje: več izdelkov, stran kategorije, zavihek z mnenji, stran o dostavi in vračilih, morda primerjava s konkurentom, odprta v drugem zavihku. Sestavlja si zaupanje in ga še nima dovolj.

Zakaj vas enako obravnavanje tiho stane

  • Kratke, neposredne seje z malo tavanja.

Hitro pravilo: širina signalizira raziskovanje, globina signalizira namero.

Kaj poslati vsakemu

Vsebina: veja raziskovalca vodi s pomiritvijo in informacijami; veja kupca vodi z odstranitvijo trenja in majhno, pošteno spodbudo.

(Oboje ilustrativno — prilagodite svojemu katalogu.)

The Difference Between a Returning Researcher and a Returning Buyer

Two people come back to your store this week. One is still gathering information — reading specs, comparing options, checking reviews, nowhere near a decision. The other has basically decided and is doing a final gut-check before paying. They look almost identical in your analytics, both “returning visitors,” but they need opposite messages. The researcher needs help deciding and will bolt if you push. The buyer needs friction removed and a small reason to act now. Send the pushy message to the researcher or the patient one to the buyer and you lose both. This page is about telling them apart from behavior, and matching each to the right response — so you stop treating a warm audience as one undifferentiated blob.

The two shapes of a returning visit

Strip away the labels and you’re looking at two different mental states.

A returning researcher is mid-consideration. They’re not sure yet — not sure it’s the right product, the right store, or the right time. Their behavior spreads out: multiple products, a category page, the reviews tab, the shipping and returns page, maybe a comparison against a competitor open in another tab. They’re assembling confidence, and they don’t have enough of it yet.

A returning buyer has mostly decided. Their behavior narrows: they go back to one product, maybe re-check the size chart or the delivery estimate, hover near the cart. They’re not exploring anymore; they’re confirming. The gap between them and a purchase is small — often just a lingering doubt or plain inertia.

The trap is that both are “returning visitors” in your reports, and both might have viewed a product two or three times. View count alone won’t separate them. A researcher can view a product three times and still be a week from deciding; a buyer can view it twice and be thirty seconds away. What separates them is the shape of the behavior, not the raw count. Reading that intent well is a skill of its own — how to recognize when a shopper is returning with higher purchase intent goes deeper than this overview.

Why treating them the same quietly costs you

Most stores run one returning-visitor experience: a single popup, one abandonment email, the same on-site banner for everyone who comes back. That one-size approach fails both people at once.

To the buyer, a patient, educational message is a wasted moment. They didn’t need convincing; they needed a clear path to checkout and maybe a small nudge. Fill their screen with “here’s how to choose” content and you slow down a sale that was ready to happen.

To the researcher, a hard close is worse. A countdown timer and “buy now, only 2 left!” aimed at someone still deciding reads as pressure from a store they haven’t decided to trust yet. Some will push back by leaving. You didn’t lose a sale you were going to make; you actively repelled one you might have.

And the default reflex — offer everyone a discount — is the most expensive miss. The buyer would often have paid full price; you just handed them margin they didn’t ask for. The researcher isn’t stuck on price at all, so the coupon doesn’t move them and teaches them to expect discounts. The urgency-versus-reassurance choice underneath all this is worth its own read: when a returning visitor needs urgency and when they need reassurance.

Where the revenue leaks: the blended average

The clearest way to see the cost is to notice what a blended approach does to your numbers. When you average researchers and buyers together, you optimize for neither.

Here’s an illustrative sketch. Say 100 returning visitors hit a product this month: 70 researchers, 30 buyers. The buyers convert well on their own — maybe 40% — so 12 sales. The researchers convert poorly without help — maybe 5% — so around 3 or 4 sales. You look at a blended ~16% and tune one generic message to that average. But the average is a fiction. If a reassurance-led message lifted researchers from 5% to 9%, that’s three or four extra sales from the group you were underserving. If a friction-removing nudge lifted buyers from 40% to 48%, that’s two or three more from the group you were slowing down. Those gains only exist if you stop treating the two as one. On a €60 product, that handful of recovered sales is real money you were averaging away.

The leak isn’t a broken page. It’s a message tuned to a customer who doesn’t exist — the “average returning visitor.”

How to tell them apart from behavior

You don’t need perfect certainty, just enough signal to branch. Look at these tells.

Signs of a researcher:

  • Views spread across several different products or a whole category, not one item.
  • Time on reviews, comparison, spec, or FAQ pages.
  • Long sessions that wander; return visits days apart.
  • No add-to-cart, or adds and removes repeatedly.
  • Repeated category visits rather than repeated single-product visits — a pattern worth reading on its own in what repeated category visits reveal about customer intent.

Signs of a buyer:

  • Return visits collapse onto one specific product.
  • Re-checking the practical details: size, delivery date, stock, returns policy.
  • Added to cart and left it sitting, or reached the cart page more than once.
  • Short, direct sessions with little wandering.
  • A shortening gap between visits — hours, not days.

A quick rule of thumb: breadth signals research, depth signals intent. Someone fanning out across options is deciding; someone drilling into one item’s fine print has mostly decided. Segmenting people by session count and pattern makes this operational rather than a guessing game — see segmenting visitors by the number of shopping sessions.

What to send each one

Once you can branch, the messages almost write themselves.

For the researcher — reduce doubt, don’t apply pressure. Give them the information that closes the confidence gap: honest comparisons between your options, the reviews that address the common worry, a sizing or buying guide, a plain answer to the top objection. The goal of this touch is a better-informed visitor, not an immediate sale. Push comes later, once they’ve tipped toward a decision.

For the buyer — remove friction and add a light reason to act. They don’t need education; they need the last small barrier gone. Confirm it’s in stock, restate free returns or the delivery date, and give a gentle, honest nudge — a modest low-stock note if it’s true, or free shipping over their cart value. One clear button. Nothing that makes them re-open the decision they’ve already closed.

The one thing you must not do is send the same message to both, or send a nearly identical follow-up on every visit. Repetition flattens the difference you just worked to detect. How to follow up with repeat browsers without repeating the same message covers keeping each touch distinct.

What to automate: two branches, one trigger

Trigger: a known contact returns and engages with a product or category.

Segment / branch condition: route on behavior shape. Cart activity, single-product focus, and shrinking visit gaps push them down the buyer branch. Multi-product or category breadth, review-page time, and no cart push them down the researcher branch.

Timing: buyers get a prompt, same-day nudge while intent is hot. Researchers get a slower, helpful message and room to breathe — pushing a researcher hard the same hour tends to backfire.

Channel: email for the researcher’s fuller, informative content; email or a short SMS for the buyer’s quick nudge, if they’ve opted in.

Content: researcher branch leads with reassurance and information; buyer branch leads with friction removal and a small, honest incentive. Neither leads with a blanket discount.

Goal: for buyers, a completed checkout. For researchers, a click into the deciding content and a move toward intent — measured over a few days, not one send.

A store example

Say you sell bikes and gear. Two returning visitors this week.

Visitor A viewed three different commuter bikes, spent time on a “how to choose a commuter bike” article, read reviews on two of them, added nothing to a cart, and came back twice over four days. Classic researcher. They get an email comparing the three models on the two things commuters care about — weight and gearing — plus links to the most helpful reviews. No timer, no coupon. The aim is to help them pick.

Visitor B viewed one specific bike three times in two days, checked the size guide and the delivery estimate, and added it to the cart yesterday. Classic buyer. They get a short same-day message: it’s in stock in their size, delivery in three days, free 30-day returns, and one button back to the cart. That’s the whole gap between them and paying. (Both illustrative — tune to your catalog.)

How to measure whether the split is working

Measure the two branches separately, or you’re back to the fiction of the average.

  • Conversion rate per branch: buyers and researchers should each beat the old blended message on their own terms.
  • Researcher progression: what share of researchers later show buyer-shaped behavior after your informative touch? That’s your leading indicator, since they rarely convert on the spot.
  • Buyer close rate and speed: did the friction-removal nudge lift completed checkouts and shorten time-to-purchase?
  • Discount margin: confirm you’re not handing coupons to buyers who’d have paid full price.
  • Unsubscribes on the buyer branch: a spike means your “nudge” reads as pressure — soften it.

How Omnisend helps

Splitting one audience into two intent groups and messaging each differently is exactly what a behavior-based platform is for. I run this in my own stores with Omnisend, which I picked after testing it against Klaviyo, largely because branching a flow on cart and browsing conditions didn’t require a developer.

The pieces that matter here: product- and category-level tracking to read behavior shape, segmentation and conditional splits to send the buyer and researcher down different paths, and email-SMS-push together so each branch uses the right channel. Omnisend is an affiliate partner of Shopimation; I recommend it from daily use. The honest caveat: no tool draws the researcher-versus-buyer line for you. You have to decide which behaviors mean what for your products, because a three-view pattern on a €15 impulse buy means something different than on a €900 sofa.

Your next step

Look at your returning visitors from the last two weeks and sort a handful by hand into “researcher” and “buyer” using the breadth-versus-depth tells above. If you can tell them apart on paper, you can build the branch. Start with a single split — one reassurance email, one friction-removal nudge — then read when a returning visitor needs urgency and when they need reassurance to sharpen the tone of each side.
