  • Woche 1: prüfen, entscheiden, exportieren, Kontakte importieren, Shop verbinden.

Bauen Sie heute Abend Ihre eigene Schätzung.

Druga plat: precenite jo in jo boste nenehno odlagali.

Dve uri: delovni čas in koledarski čas

Spodnji razponi so grobi in predpostavljajo eno sposobno osebo. Obravnavajte jih kot ilustrativne.

Priprava in izvoz — nekaj dni, večinoma razmišljanja

Pregled tega, kar imate, odločanje, kaj si zasluži oditi z vami, in izvoz kontaktov, evidenc o privolitvi, seznamov za blokiranje, segmentov in preteklih podatkov iz stare platforme. Sami izvozi so hitri.

Uvoz kontaktov — nekaj ur do enega dneva

Predelava avtomatizacij in predlog — glavnina praktičnega dela

Preverjanje in zaustavitev — nekaj dni, razpršenih

Obdelan primer (ilustrativno)

Trgovina z 12.000 kontakti, petimi avtomatizacijami in enim lastnikom-upraviteljem, ki opravlja delo v večernih sejah:

    1. teden: pregled, odločanje, izvoz, uvoz kontaktov, povezava trgovine. Morda 5–6 ur za tipkovnico.
    1. teden: predelava obeh denarnih tokov (opuščena košarica, dobrodošlica), začetek pošiljanja kampanj iz Omnisenda najbolj vpletenemu segmentu. Še 5–6 ur.
  • 3.–4. teden: predelava preostalih tokov, povečevanje obsega kampanj, obe platformi se prekrivata, stari tokovi se ugašajo, ko vsak nov zaživi. Nekaj ur na teden.
    1. teden: poln obseg na Omnisendu, prihodek navzkrižno preverjen, stara platforma preklicana.

Skupaj: približno pet tednov koledarja, pod 20 ur dejanskega dela.

How Long Does an Ecommerce Email Platform Migration Take

For a typical established store — one list, a handful of automations, one person doing the work — plan on two to six weeks of calendar time, of which only a few days is actual hands-on work. The gap between those two numbers is the part almost everyone underestimates: the data import takes hours, but warming up your sending reputation and running the old and new platforms in parallel takes weeks, and there is no honest way to compress it. Those figures are rough planning ranges based on migrating my own stores, not a guarantee — your list size, automation count, and how much you decide to rebuild all move the needle. This article breaks the timeline into phases so you can build your own estimate instead of borrowing mine.

Why the question matters more than it seems

Nobody migrates for fun. You migrate because the current platform is too expensive, too clumsy, or missing something — and every week the migration drags on is a week of paying for two tools, splitting your attention, and running half-configured automations. Underestimate the timeline and you end up cutting the corner that actually matters: switching everything over in a weekend, blasting your full list from a brand-new setup, and watching your emails land in spam for a month. That mistake costs more than the migration ever saved.

The flip side: overestimate it and you’ll keep postponing. I put off leaving my old setup longer than I should have because “migration” sounded like a quarter-long project. The hands-on part turned out to be far smaller than the calendar part.

The two clocks: work time versus calendar time

Every migration runs on two clocks at once.

Work time is you, at a keyboard: exporting data, importing contacts, rebuilding flows, redoing templates, repointing signup forms. For a small or mid-sized store this is realistically spread over several days of focused sessions, not weeks.

Calendar time is everything you wait on: the parallel-run period where both platforms operate side by side, and the sending warm-up where you ramp volume gradually so inbox providers learn to trust mail coming from your new setup. This is measured in weeks and it barely cares how fast you work. Reputation is built by consistent sending over time; you can’t buy it with effort on a Saturday.

Most bad estimates come from quoting the first clock and forgetting the second.

Phase-by-phase: where the time actually goes

The ranges below are rough and assume one competent person. Treat them as illustrative.

Preparation and export — a few days, mostly thinking

Auditing what you have, deciding what deserves to come with you, and exporting contacts, consent records, suppression lists, segments, and historical data from the old platform. The exports themselves are quick. The deciding is the real work, and it pays off later — every automation you choose not to rebuild is hours saved.

Importing contacts — hours to a day

Connecting your store, importing your cleaned contact file, and confirming subscription statuses came through correctly. Fast in raw time, but don’t rush the checking; a botched import is the single most expensive shortcut available. The careful version of this step is laid out in how to move contacts to Omnisend without losing data.

Rebuilding automations and templates — the bulk of hands-on work

Flows don’t transfer between platforms. Welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, win-back — each gets rebuilt by hand: triggers, delays, splits, and the emails themselves. For a store with four to six flows, expect this to be your biggest block of keyboard time, spread across multiple sessions. Budget it per flow rather than as one vague lump. Templates add time too, though rebuilding a clean design from scratch is often faster than trying to replicate an old one pixel for pixel.

Parallel run and warm-up — two to four weeks, calendar-bound

This is the phase that sets your total. You start sending from Omnisend at reduced volume to your most engaged subscribers, increase gradually, and keep the old platform alive as a fallback until the new one has proven itself on deliverability and revenue. Rushing here is where migrations go wrong in ways that take months to repair. How long you overlap and how you ramp are their own topics: how to run two email platforms during a migration and how to warm up sending after migrating to Omnisend.

Verification and shutdown — a few days, spread thin

Cross-checking revenue attribution against your store admin, repointing anything still connected to the old tool, archiving final exports, cancelling the old subscription. Small tasks, easy to forget, cheap to do.

What stretches the timeline — and what doesn’t

Things that genuinely add time: a large list (warm-up ramps are longer), many complex automations with heavy branching, SMS subscribers with consent records that need careful handling, multiple stores or brands, and peak season — if your busy quarter is starting, wait, because migrating during it is a self-inflicted wound.

Things that people think add time but mostly don’t: list size for the import itself (importing 50,000 contacts isn’t meaningfully slower work than importing 5,000), and template count, if you accept that old designs can be retired rather than cloned.

One more variable is who does the work — a solo founder fitting this into evenings sequences it differently than a two-person team, which is exactly the situation covered in planning an Omnisend migration with a small team.

A worked example (illustrative)

A store with 12,000 contacts, five automations, and one owner-operator doing the work in evening sessions:

  • Week 1: audit, decide, export, import contacts, connect the store. Maybe 5–6 hours at the keyboard.
  • Week 2: rebuild the two money flows (abandoned cart, welcome), start sending campaigns from Omnisend to the most engaged segment. Another 5–6 hours.
  • Weeks 3–4: rebuild the remaining flows, ramp campaign volume, both platforms overlapping, old flows switched off as each new one goes live. A few hours a week.
  • Week 5: full volume on Omnisend, revenue cross-checked, old platform cancelled.

Total: roughly five weeks of calendar, under 20 hours of actual work. Your store will differ — the shape is the point, not the exact figures.

How to know the migration is actually done

Not when the data is imported. A migration is finished when three things hold: every automation you decided to keep is live and firing on the new platform, deliverability metrics (spam complaints, bounces, unsubscribe rate) look stable at full volume, and email revenue as a share of store revenue is back in its normal range. Until then you’re still mid-migration, whatever the dashboard says.

Where Omnisend affects the timeline

The calendar-bound phases — warm-up, parallel running — take the same weeks on any destination platform. Where the tool choice showed up for me was the hands-on clock: when I moved my own stores over after trialing Klaviyo, rebuilding flows in Omnisend was something I could do solo in evening sessions without support tickets, which is a real difference when the person doing the migration is also the person packing orders. It won’t shorten your warm-up by a day, though. Nothing will.

Your next step

Build your own estimate tonight. Count your automations, note your list size, check the calendar for your next quiet month — then multiply the phases above by your own numbers. If the total feels large, remember the split: mostly waiting, not working. Then start with the full sequence in the complete Omnisend migration checklist.
