(Was sollte die erste Warenkorbabbruch-E-Mail sagen)
(Was sollte die letzte Warenkorbabbruch-E-Mail sagen)

Knüpfe SMS an deine Wertstufen.

Was du messen solltest

Email in SMS imata nasprotni prednosti.

Združite ju in vsak pokrije šibkost drugega.

Kako razporediti oba kanala

  • Email 1 — ~1 ura. Opomnik: izdelki, slike, ena povezava nazaj do košarice. Prednost emaila — vizualno in podrobno. (Kaj naj pove prvi email za zapuščeno košarico)
  • SMS — ~20 ur.

Pravilo izhoda mora pokriti oba

Ena tehnična past: če kupec kupi, mora nakup ustaviti oba, email in SMS.

Primerjajte privoljene košarice s SMS-om in brez njega.

Kako Omnisend pomaga

Combining Email and SMS for Cart Recovery

The way to combine email and SMS for cart recovery is simple: email does the persuading, SMS does the interrupting. Send email first (around one hour after abandonment) because it costs nothing and carries the full argument — cart contents, photos, policies. Add one SMS as a second touch, but only for carts above a value threshold you set (say €80+) and only to people who explicitly opted in to texts. Keep the SMS under 160 characters with a direct checkout link. That single, well-placed text typically reaches people who never opened the email — without turning your recovery flow into a nuisance. The exact sequence, timing and rules follow below.

The situation: emails go out, half your buyers never see them

You already run a cart email. It performs — on the fraction of people who open it. But your customers’ inboxes look like yours: promotions tab, 40 unread messages, your reminder sandwiched between a courier notification and a newsletter. Meanwhile the same customer sees a text within minutes, because almost everyone does. So a real share of your recoverable revenue sits with people who intended to buy, got distracted, and never saw your email at all. If you’re paying €1–3 per click to get someone to your checkout, losing them to an unopened email stings twice.

Why “just send more emails” isn’t the answer

The usual response is to add a fourth email or crank up subject-line testing. Both hit diminishing returns fast: you’re optimizing delivery into an inbox the customer isn’t checking. Retargeting ads have the same flaw plus a bill — you pay Meta again for attention you already earned. The problem isn’t message quality. It’s that one channel physically can’t reach part of your audience at the moment that matters. A second channel can. The mistake most stores make is bolting SMS on carelessly: texting everyone, texting too often, texting people who never agreed to it. That’s how you burn a phone number list that took years to build.

What an unread email costs you: quick math

Illustrative numbers. Suppose 500 abandoned carts a month, €90 average cart. If 55% of recipients never open your recovery emails, roughly 275 carts a month get zero effective contact — about €24,750 of cart value that never even hears your pitch. You don’t need SMS to convert all of it; you need it to reach some of it. If a single text to opted-in, high-value abandoners recovers even a handful of orders monthly, it covers its per-message cost many times over. These figures are invented to show the logic — run them with your own open rate and cart value.

Division of labor: what each channel is for

Don’t treat SMS as a shorter email. They do different jobs.

  • Email carries content: product images, the full cart, reviews, shipping and returns answers, alternatives. It’s free per send, so it can afford to be ignored. It’s your workhorse for all carts.
  • SMS carries urgency: one sentence, one link, near-instant visibility. It costs real money per message and spends customer goodwill, so it’s reserved for carts worth interrupting someone over.
  • Push is a third option for subscribers you have — cheaper than SMS, weaker signal. Where it fits is covered in email, SMS, or push: which channel should recover an abandoned cart.

The combined flow, step by step

Build in this order. Don’t add SMS until step 3 exists.

  1. First: get a solid email sequence live — two or three messages. If you don’t have one, start with how to build a three-message abandoned cart flow.
  2. Second: build SMS consent collection — a phone field with explicit marketing opt-in at checkout or in your signup form. Never text a number you only have from order fulfillment; in the EU and most markets that’s a legal problem, not just a courtesy one.
  3. Third: insert one SMS into the flow, gated by cart value and consent.
  4. Later, not now: a second SMS for final-notice situations, SMS-specific offers, or push as a pre-email nudge. Skip all of it until the single text proves itself.

The exact sequence to configure

  • Trigger: cart abandoned, no order placed. Exit rule: purchase removes the contact from the whole flow instantly — a text about a cart someone already bought is the fastest way to an unsubscribe.
  • Touch 1 — Email, 1 hour after abandonment: cart contents, one checkout button, shipping and returns stated plainly. Goal: catch the still-warm intent.
  • Touch 2 — SMS, 20–24 hours, only if: cart value above your threshold AND SMS consent given AND no purchase yet. Send within daytime hours (roughly 10:00–20:00 local — a 3 a.m. text is remembered for the wrong reasons). Message: “Hi [name], your is still in your cart at [store]. Complete your order here: [link]. Reply STOP to opt out.” Goal: reach the email-ignorers.
  • Touch 3 — Email, 48–72 hours: final reminder; social proof or, if your margin allows and the customer is new, a modest incentive. Whether to discount at all is its own decision — how to recover abandoned carts without offering a discount makes the case for holding the line.

Frequency cap: one recovery SMS per customer per flow, and consider a rule like no more than two marketing texts per month across all campaigns. Email tolerance is high; SMS tolerance is not.

A concrete example (numbers invented)

A store selling home fitness gear sets its SMS threshold at €100. A customer abandons a €240 rowing-machine accessory bundle at 14:00. Email lands at 15:00 — unopened. At 13:30 next day, one text: “Hi Ana, your rower bundle is still waiting at FitStore. Finish checkout: fitsto.re/c/8k2. Reply STOP to opt out.” She taps, pays full price. A different customer abandons a €19 resistance band the same day; he only ever gets the emails, because interrupting someone’s afternoon over €19 costs more goodwill than it earns. That’s the whole system: the text is a scalpel, not a megaphone.

Metrics that show whether SMS earns its keep

  • Revenue per recipient, by channel. Compare the email touches and the SMS touch separately; SMS must clear its per-message cost with room to spare.
  • Recovered carts from the SMS step — specifically orders from people who didn’t open either email.
  • SMS opt-out rate per send. If it climbs past a small fraction of a percent per message, your threshold is too low or your timing is off.
  • Total flow recovery rate before vs. after adding SMS, measured over 4–6 weeks. Count it properly — how to measure abandoned cart revenue correctly explains what to attribute and what not to.

Running both channels in one flow with Omnisend

The practical reason to run email and SMS from one platform is the exit logic: when both channels live in the same workflow, a purchase or an email conversion stops the SMS before it sends. With separate tools, that coordination is duct tape. This was a deciding factor for my own stores — I came to email automation late and skeptical, having written the whole channel off as spam, and when ad costs finally pushed me into it I compared Klaviyo and Omnisend. I picked Omnisend largely because email, SMS and push sit in one workflow builder with shared conditions, at a price that made SMS worth experimenting with. Fair warning: Omnisend won’t solve consent collection for you — you still have to add the opt-in field and actually get people to tick it, and a thin SMS list means thin results at first.

Your next step

Check one number today: what percentage of your cart-recovery email recipients never open any message in the sequence. That’s the audience SMS exists for. If it’s large and you have (or can start collecting) SMS consent, add the single gated text at hour 20 and judge it on revenue per send after a month.
