Brezplačna dostava odstrani pristojbino, ki jo dojemajo kot nepravično, jo zamerijo in zaradi nje pogosto opustijo nakup. V mnogih trgovinah vas obe stanejo približno enako marže, a brezplačna dostava bolje pretvarja in ne poceni izdelka. Ta stran prikazuje natanko, kdaj jo izbrati, kdaj je popust dejansko prava izbira in kako izvesti primerjavo na svojih številkah.

Začnite s številko, ki odloči

Pred kakršno koli strategijo naredite en izračun, ker razreši večino razprave. Vzemite svoj fiksni strošek dostave in svojo povprečno vrednost naročila ter primerjajte, kaj vas vsaka spodbuda dejansko stane.

Ponazoritveni primer.

(Številke so ponazoritvene.)

In nekatere ljudi res pretvori.

Kako meriti, kateri zmaga

Ne prepirajte se o tem — preizkusite. V svojem toku za obnovitev košarice razdelite sporočilo s spodbudo: polovica dobi brezplačno dostavo, polovica dobi približno stroškovno enakovreden odstotni popust.

  • Stopnjo pretvorbe vsake veje.

Iskren del: orodje izvede test, a vam ne more povedati vašega stroška dostave ali vaše prave marže — to so vaše številke in odločajo o vsem zgoraj. Omnisend le naredi primerjavo izvedljivo in berljivo brez razvijalca.

When Free Shipping Works Better Than a Percentage Discount

Free shipping usually beats a percentage discount when shipping cost is the specific thing stalling the sale, when your average order is high enough that the shipping fee is a small fraction of it, and when you’d rather protect the perceived value of your products than train customers to expect money off. A percentage discount lowers the price of the item — the thing your customer already decided they wanted. Free shipping removes a fee they see as unfair, resent, and often abandon over. In many stores the two cost you roughly the same margin, but free shipping converts better and doesn’t cheapen the product. This page shows exactly when to pick it, when a discount is actually the right call, and how to run the comparison on your own numbers.

Start with the number that decides it

Before any strategy, do one calculation, because it settles most of the debate. Take your flat shipping cost and your average order value, and compare what each incentive actually costs you.

Illustrative example. Average order €80, gross margin 40% (€32 profit per order), flat shipping cost to you €6.

  • 10% discount: €8 off the price, straight out of the €32 profit. Cost to you: €8 per order.
  • Free shipping: you absorb €6. Cost to you: €6 per order.

Free shipping is cheaper here and it targets the exact objection. But flip the numbers: if your average order is €25 and shipping is €7, free shipping costs more per order than a 10% code (€7 vs €2.50) and eats a brutal share of a thin ticket. Your own AOV and shipping rate decide which lever is cheaper — run them before you pick. (Figures illustrative.)

The problem: you reach for a percentage by default

Most stores default to “X% off” because it’s the easy, familiar lever. It shows up in the welcome flow, the cart flow, the win-back. And it does convert some people. But it has two costs that a shipping offer doesn’t.

First, it discounts the wrong thing. The customer wanted the product at its price — they added it to cart. What made them hesitate at checkout, more often than anything, was the shipping line appearing at the end. A percentage off attacks a price they’d already accepted while ignoring the fee that actually stopped them.

Second, it teaches price sensitivity. Every “10% off” quietly tells the customer your prices are soft and worth waiting out. Free shipping doesn’t send that signal — people read shipping as a fee to be waived, not as the product being worth less. Your item keeps its perceived value. If that distinction matters to you, it’s the heart of the difference between a useful incentive and a margin-destroying discount.

Why “just discount more” doesn’t fix cart abandonment

Shipping cost is one of the most common reasons carts get abandoned at the final step. When someone bails because €6.90 shipping appeared on an €80 order, a 10% discount is an odd answer — it hands them €8 off the products they were fine paying for, and in some setups still charges the shipping they objected to. You’ve spent more margin and left the actual objection standing.

Free shipping removes the specific friction the customer named by abandoning. It’s the matched response. This is why, in a cart-recovery sequence, a free-shipping offer often outperforms an equivalent or larger percentage discount — it answers the real question instead of a different one. There’s a fuller treatment of matching the offer to the objection in what to offer instead of 10% off.

When free shipping is the better lever

Reach for free shipping when:

  • Shipping cost is the visible objection. High cart-abandonment right after the shipping line appears is the tell.
  • Your AOV is comfortably above your shipping cost, so absorbing the fee is a small slice of the order (see the calculation up top).
  • You want to protect product value. Premium or considered-purchase stores especially — a discount cheapens the item; waived shipping doesn’t.
  • You can attach a threshold. “Free shipping over €X” nudges order value up instead of down, which a flat percentage never does. Set the threshold a little above your current AOV and it lifts basket size while it converts.
  • You’re recovering a cart or checkout. The objection is freshest and most specifically about the total, including shipping.

When a percentage discount is actually the right call

Free shipping isn’t always the answer. Pick the percentage when:

  • Your AOV is low and shipping is a big fraction of it — the math flips, as shown above.
  • You already offer free shipping as standard, so it’s not a lever you can pull.
  • The blocker is genuinely price, not the fee — for a high-ticket item where someone’s stretching their budget, real money off the price can be what moves them.
  • You’re clearing slow stock and actually want to move units on price.

And sometimes neither is right, and a gift, bundle, or add-on beats both on margin and on how it makes the customer feel — that’s the case made in how to use bundles, gifts, and add-ons instead of deeper discounts.

What to automate

The point is to send the right lever to the right moment, automatically.

  • Trigger: cart or checkout abandonment is the prime spot for a shipping offer, since that’s where the fee bites.
  • Segment: branch on cart value. Orders above your threshold might convert on a plain reminder; orders near it get “your order ships free” or “add €X and shipping’s on us”; low-value carts might warrant a different lever entirely.
  • Timing: hold the incentive for message two or three, after a discount-free reminder has had its shot — the same margin discipline that applies to any offer in a flow.
  • Channel: email for the reasoning and product block; SMS for a short, high-intent nudge on valuable carts.
  • Content: name the benefit plainly — “we’ll cover shipping” reads as generous and specific, not as a fire sale.
  • Goal: recover the cart at full product price, with only the shipping fee (or less) given up.

Because these offers can quietly pull people away from paying full price when they’d have bought anyway, keep an eye on how to stop promotional emails from cannibalizing full-price sales as you roll this out.

How to measure which one wins

Don’t argue about it — test it. In your cart-recovery flow, split the incentive message: half get free shipping, half get the roughly cost-equivalent percentage discount.

  • Conversion rate of each arm. Which lever recovers more carts?
  • Margin per recovered order, not revenue. The cheaper-to-you lever can win on profit even if it converts slightly less.
  • Average order value, especially if you used a free-shipping threshold — watch whether baskets grew.
  • Return rate, in case one lever is pulling in buyers who bail later.

Let the numbers pick. In many stores free shipping wins on both conversion and margin, but the split depends on your AOV and shipping rate, so measure yours rather than trusting a blog’s average. What to measure before you declare a discount campaign successful covers the traps in reading these results.

How Omnisend helps

Running that head-to-head test and the cart-value branching is exactly the kind of thing I set up in Omnisend for my own stores after weighing it against Klaviyo. You can trigger on checkout abandonment, branch the flow by cart value so the free-shipping-threshold message only goes to the carts it applies to, A/B split the free-shipping arm against the discount arm inside one automation, and read conversion and revenue per arm without exporting anything. Generating the free-shipping code and the discount code both live in the same place.

The honest part: the tool runs the test, but it can’t tell you your shipping cost or your true margin — those are your numbers, and they decide everything above. Omnisend just makes the comparison buildable and readable without a developer. It’s an affiliate partner of Shopimation; I recommend it from real daily use, and the free tier is enough to run the free-shipping-vs-discount split on your cart flow before you commit to either.

Your next step

Do the calculation from the top of this page on your own AOV, margin, and shipping cost — right now, on paper. If free shipping is cheaper or roughly even per order, set up the split test in your cart flow this week and let conversion and margin decide. Then fit whichever lever wins into the bigger picture with how to protect gross margin in automated campaigns, so every incentive across your flows is chosen on purpose rather than by habit.
