Das ändert, was du zuerst baust.

Was du automatisieren solltest – Auslöser, Timing, Inhalt

Nach-dem-Kauf-Flow (Direktbestellungen). Auslöser: erste Bestellung in deinem eigenen Shop.

Že leta ustvarjate kupce in vsakega izročate marketplace platformi.

To spremeni, kaj zgradite najprej.

Cilj: zajeti ponovni prihodek ob ničelni proviziji platforme.

Kako to izmeriti

Email Automation for Marketplace Sellers Building Their Own Store

If you’ve built a business on Amazon, Etsy, or eBay and you’re now launching your own store, email automation is the piece that makes the move worth it. On a marketplace, you don’t own the customer — the platform does. It sits between you and the buyer, hides their email, controls the follow-up, takes a cut, and can change the rules or suspend you overnight. Your own store flips that: you finally own the customer relationship and can market to past buyers directly, for free, forever. But a website alone doesn’t hand you that — automation does. This article is about the flows that convert your marketplace momentum into a direct, owned customer base you’re no longer renting from a platform.

Why this is a different starting point

Most “email automation for ecommerce” advice assumes you’re starting cold, building a list from website traffic. You’re not. You already have real customers, real sales, proof your product works, and often reviews and a brand people recognize. Your problem isn’t demand — it’s ownership. You’ve been generating customers for years and handing every one of them to the marketplace.

That changes what you build first. A brand-new store worries about getting its first orders; you’re worrying about capturing and keeping buyers you already earn elsewhere. If you’re genuinely early and low-volume, a practical ecommerce growth plan for the next 90 days is the better starting map. This piece assumes you have marketplace traction and want to convert it into something you own.

The real problem: you’re building someone else’s asset

Here’s the trap. Every sale on a marketplace grows the platform’s data, not yours. You can’t email your Amazon buyers a promotion. You can’t build a welcome flow for Etsy customers who bought last year. The platform deliberately keeps that relationship, because your customer list is the thing they don’t want you to have — it’s what would let you leave.

So a seller can do millions in marketplace revenue and still have no direct line to a single customer. The day the platform raises fees, changes the algorithm, or suspends the account, the whole business is exposed, because none of the customer relationships are actually theirs. That fragility is the reason to build your own store at all.

Why “just open a website” isn’t the fix

Standing up a Shopify or WooCommerce store is the easy part. The hard part is that a new site has no traffic and no list, so a lot of marketplace sellers launch a store, get crickets, and conclude direct doesn’t work. The mistake is treating the website as a separate cold business instead of a destination for the audience they already have.

Running ads to the new store to force traffic is the expensive version of the same mistake — you’d be paying an ad platform to reach people you already sold to on another platform. The move that actually works is redirecting your existing marketplace momentum into an owned list, then letting automation do the repeat-selling the marketplace never let you do. Reducing that platform dependence is the whole strategic point, and it’s the same logic as reducing your ecommerce store’s dependence on Meta and Google ads — just applied to marketplaces instead of ad networks.

Where the value leaks

The leak is enormous and invisible: every repeat purchase your marketplace customers make that you don’t control. A happy Amazon buyer who’d gladly reorder does so through Amazon — or through a competitor Amazon shows them next — and you get the platform’s terms, the platform’s fee, and no ability to build loyalty.

Illustration: say you have 10,000 past marketplace buyers and even 20% would join your list if invited well. That’s 2,000 people you can email for free, indefinitely, with no platform cut on the repeat sales. At an average order value of €40 and two repeat orders a year, that’s a direct revenue stream the marketplace was quietly keeping from you. The leak isn’t a flow you haven’t built — it’s an entire owned channel you haven’t opened.

The practical solution, in order

  1. Get marketplace buyers onto your own list, within the rules. You can’t export emails or spam them, but you can invite them: a package insert with a QR code and a real reason to visit your site, a branded thank-you card, a warranty or registration page, a members-only offer available only on your store. Give them a reason the marketplace can’t match.
  2. Capture aggressively on the new store. Every visitor who arrives from a package insert or your marketplace profile should be met with a signup offer, so the ones you send over actually convert to contacts.
  3. Turn on the core direct-store flows. Welcome, abandoned cart, and post-purchase — the automations the marketplace never let you run.
  4. Then build the repeat-purchase engine the platform was blocking: replenishment, cross-sell, win-back.

What to automate — triggers, timing, content

Welcome flow for marketplace converts. Trigger: signup from your insert offer or store. Lead with acknowledgment — these people already know your product from the marketplace, so email one isn’t “here’s who we are,” it’s “thanks for buying direct, here’s what you get here that you couldn’t there” (better prices without the platform cut, first access, direct support). Goal: make ordering direct feel obviously better than reordering on the marketplace.

Post-purchase flow (direct orders). Trigger: first order on your own store. Content: over-deliver on the experience the marketplace commoditizes — a real thank-you, usage tips, an invitation to reorder direct next time. Goal: cement the habit of buying from you, not the platform.

Replenishment / reorder flow. Trigger: time since purchase for consumable products. This is the single biggest thing a marketplace denied you — the marketplace owned the reorder. Now you can prompt it directly. Goal: capture repeat revenue at zero platform fee.

Review and referral flow. Trigger: post-delivery. You already know your buyers leave reviews — you saw it on the marketplace. Channel that goodwill into reviews and referrals on your own store to build its independent credibility. Goal: give the new store the social proof the marketplace listing already had.

A store example

Take a seller doing solid volume in handmade candles on Etsy, now launching their own site. Old reality: thousands of buyers, zero owned contacts, every reorder going through Etsy’s fees and Etsy’s “you might also like” pushing competitors. New setup: every order ships with a thank-you card and QR code offering 15% off a first direct order plus a scent not sold on Etsy. Buyers who scan land on the store, hit a signup offer, and enter a welcome flow that explains why direct is better — lower prices, exclusive scents, direct support. A few weeks after a candle ships, a replenishment flow reminds them they’re probably burning low and can reorder direct in two clicks. Reviews get requested on the owned store. Within a year a chunk of the Etsy base is buying direct, at better margin, on a list the seller actually owns.

Illustrative, but the arc — invite off the platform, welcome warmly, then own the reorder — is the whole strategy.

How to measure it

  • Marketplace-to-direct conversion rate — the share of marketplace buyers who join your list and order direct. Your headline number; it measures whether the whole migration is working.
  • Repeat-purchase rate on your own store — proof you’re capturing the reorders the platform used to take.
  • Revenue per subscriber — what your owned list is worth, so you can compare a direct sale’s margin against a marketplace sale’s after fees.
  • Share of revenue that’s direct vs. marketplace — the number that tells you how much of your business you actually own, tracked over time.
  • List growth from inserts — scans and signups per hundred orders shipped, so you know if your insert offer is compelling enough.

How Omnisend fits

Once buyers start arriving from your inserts, you need a tool that captures them, welcomes them, and runs the reorder and cross-sell flows the marketplace never allowed — ideally with SMS too, since some of your buyers will prefer texts. That’s what I use Omnisend for in my own stores; after testing it against Klaviyo I stayed for the self-service setup (you don’t need an agency to launch a welcome and cart flow), the combined email and SMS, and pricing that suits a business still shifting weight off the marketplace and watching costs.

The honest part: automation captures and keeps the customers, but it can’t get them onto your list — that’s on your insert offer, your product, and giving people a real reason to buy direct. A weak offer or an experience no better than the marketplace won’t convert anyone, no matter how good the flow. Also respect marketplace rules on contacting buyers; invite, don’t scrape. Omnisend is an affiliate partner of Shopimation, and I recommend it from daily use — the free tier is enough to build your welcome and replenishment flows before you commit.

Your next step

Design one thing this week: the package insert or thank-you offer that gives your marketplace buyers a concrete reason to visit your own store and join your list. That single asset is the bridge from renting customers to owning them — without it, the best automation in the world has nobody to talk to. Once buyers start arriving, switch on your welcome and replenishment flows so the reorders the marketplace used to keep finally come to you. If you sell higher-priced items where each customer is worth more, pair this with email automation for high-ticket ecommerce stores, where the direct relationship matters even more per buyer.
